International review: Great news for Villa skipper Vlaar

Ron Vlaar had a great day in the international fold - receiving the call to travel with Holland to the World Cup and then playing 90 minutes for them as they beat Ghana 1-0 at the Amsterdam Arena.

Vlaar received the Brazil news from Louis Van Gaal in the afternoon before impressing in central defence for the Dutch in the evening.

Robin van Persie scored the only goal of the game in their latest World Cup warm-up.

Having missed the 1-1 draw with Ecuador a fortnight ago, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Nigel de Jong were among five added to the starting XI.

But it was skipper Van Persie - scorer of the equaliser against Ecuador - who made the early breakthrough, tapping home from six yards after being teed up by Sneijder.

Holland now face one more friendly against Wales on Wednesday before departing for the showpiece football tournament.

Ciaran Clark was an unused sub as Republic of Ireland drew 0-0 with Italy in a friendly at Craven Cottage.

England's first Group D opponents at the World Cup this summer produced a patchy performance against a makeshift Ireland side.

Martin O'Neill's men could have grabbed a late victory, but substitute Stephen Quinn smashed a shot against the bar.

Italy will be without Riccardo Montolivo in Brazil after the AC Milan midfielder broke his leg.

The 29-year-old went down after a collision with Reading defender Alex Pearce and, after a lengthy delay, was carried off on a stretcher.

On Sunday, Brad Guzan is back in action, with USA facing Turkey, kick-off 7pm at the Red Bull Arena at New Jersey.

On Tuesday, Andreas Weimann is with Austria as they face Czech Republic at the Andruv Stadium in Olomouc, kick-off 7pm.

On Wednesday, Vlaar is back in action for the Dutch as they face Wales at the Amsterdam Arena, kick-off 7pm.

On Friday June 6, Clark's Ireland face Costa Rica in PPL Stadium, Philadelphia, kick-off 3pm.

On Saturday June 7, Guzan's USA side face Nigeria at Everbank Field in Jacksonville, Florida, kick-off 11pm.
