It wasn't the result they wanted but it was great to see Villa Ladies take their place in the Women's Super League this week.

Villa Ladies went down 2-0 to the vastly-experienced Doncaster Belles in a highly-enjoyable match for the crowd of 307, some of them new to female football.

Bethany England and Sue Smith scored the necessary goals for the visitors but there were fine performances from the hosts, in particular Maddy Cusack, Sarah Mayling and Livy Fergusson.

It was a proud moment for boss Ron Mellor, head coach Joe Hunt and the team as they lined-up for their very first game in the newly-created division, which has seen huge media exposure.

They may have lost but the second half in particular offered big hope for the rest of the campaign, which continues with Watford Ladies away on Sunday.

Mellor spoke of an improved "tempo and fire" after the break - and he was spot on as Villa Ladies gave their established visitors some real scares.

Jade Richards saw an overhead kick fly wide, Carly Davies's shot was palmed away from safety while Alicia Robinson almost chipped the keeper in the final minute from 35 yards out only for it to be tipped away.

Those moments alone are cause for optimism and there's no question that the team will have big wins this term.
