Villa U21 2-4 Chelsea U21: Johnson/Robinson goals not enough

Villa were beaten in their final home game of the campaign despite a bright second-half showing against Chelsea.

Goals from Daniel Johnson and Callum Robinson weren't enough for the young claret and blues side in a lively contest at Villa Park.

The visitors had the edge over Gordon Cowans' team with John Swift and Lewis Baker both scoring braces.

Swift got Chelsea off to a flying start on four minutes, racing on to a through ball from Nathan Ake before slotting under Craig Hill.

Villa looked to stage a quick response and Robinson had the ball in the net only to be flagged offside.

The equaliser arrived on 24 minutes when skipper Johnson stroked the ball past Chelsea keeper Jamal Blackman from 20 yards.

However, Villa weren't on level terms for long as Swift pounced to score his second.

This time he ran from deep and collected Alex Davey's pass before finishing confidently on 30 minutes.

Five minutes before the break, Baker got in behind the Villa defence and produced an audacious chip over Hill to score Chelsea's third.

The margin could have been greater had Hill not produced a couple of superb saves.

The Villa custodian did well to tip away a swerving 25-yard drive from Islam Feruz, while he also stood tall to block a close-range Baker attempt.

The hosts came storming out of the blocks in the second-half with Chelsea defender Davey doing well to block a Graham Burke effort on the line.

Keeper Blackman also made a superb reflex save to deny Robinson.

The teenage forward got his reward on the hour mark, though, with an instinctive finish from six-yards after Jordan Graham whipped in a free-kick from the right.

Marco Van Ginkel rattled the crossbar for the visitors late on before Baker wrapped up the points.

Baker fired home a penalty after Janoi Donacien was harshly penalised for a challenge on Swift.
