Gordon Cowans wants his Villa side to kick on and aim for a top eight finish in the Barclays U21 Premier League.
Cowans takes the claret and blues to Middlesbrough tonight with the aim of building on last week's 4-2 win over Blackburn.
The victory moved Villa up to 15th in the table but the development coach insists there is still plenty of room for improvement.
And he wants to see the momentum continue in this evening's game at the Riverside, which kicks off at 7pm.
"The main thing last week was getting the win as our position in the league is not good enough," said Cowans.
"We need to be getting higher up in the league and another win should move us up quite a bit.
"Ideally we would like to move right up the league but we've got plenty of games coming up, so we need to try and kick on."
Cowans was delighted with Villa's attacking play against Blackburn in B6 last Monday.
However, the concession of two late goals left the European Cup legend with a slight concern.
"I thought in the first half we were ok but didn't play with enough tempo and didn't move the ball about quick enough and didn't get tight enough to them," he said.
"But the second half was much better. We started bright and I thought the goals we scored were very good.
"But I'm disappointed with the goals we conceded too - we just switched off once we were 4-0 up."
