Joe Bennett will give Villa extra options after coming back from injury, says Paul Lambert.
Lambert was pleased to see Bennett return to training a fortnight ago after a long spell on the sidelines with troublesome knee and back problems.
Bennett was Villa's first-choice left-back in the previous campaign but has been beset with problems since pre-season.
Antonio Luna was signed in the summer while Ryan Bertrand has taken on the main man mantle since his January move from Chelsea.
Bennett returned to the starting line-up for the away clash with Cardiff - but in the unusual position of left winger.
Lambert was pleased with his performance and admitted this week that his versatility gives him food for thought in the coming weeks and months ahead.
He said: "Joe gives us options.
"He was out for a long time and that game will have done him the world of good.
"He lasted for about an hour or so.
"He's back and we threw him in because he gave us a bit of balance on that side. I thought he did very well.
"I was pleased for him because he played well despite being out for that length of time and having not really played many games at all this season.
"He had the problem with his knee and then his back. But that's his first real test in earnest in four months or so.
"There's not an issue for him with his confidence. We only took him off because of match fitness."
