Gaffer's verdict: Lambert assessment after Everton loss

Paul Lambert says Villa didn't deserve to lose a tight, cagey game at Everton after looking comfortable for three-quarters of the match.

Villa were looking solid and assured at 1-0 up until Steven Naismith equalised on 73 minutes.

Lambert believes that was a crucial moment in the encounter and gave the Toffees the impetus to go on and win the clash.

The Villa boss, while not making excuses, also pointed to a touch of fatigue from the sapping 4-3 derby win over West Brom on Wednesday.

He said: "I thought we looked really comfortable.

"They had one chance in the first half and hit the post.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game at the best of times but we had a gruelling game on Wednesday. The two days turnaround is tough in this league.

"But for 73 minutes we were comfortable. We were excellent up until their first goal.

"It was good play for our goal. Fabian does great.

"Then Christian puts Leo through on goal. It was a good finish. It was a classic counter-attack.

"Their first goal was disappointing. The second goal is a world-class free-kick. You can't do anything about that.

"I am not so sure we deserved to lose the game. We played pretty well after a hard game on Wednesday. I thought we were well in it up to that first goal.

"I am not happy to lose. But we had a really hard match on Wednesday. We only had two days to recover. But if we keep that level of performance we will be alright.

"We are still are in there with a decent points tally. If we keep playing the way we are, we will certainly win more games than not.

"You just keep trying to build it and keep going. The next target is the team above you."

Lambert also revealed that Ron Vlaar was withdrawn after feeling his hamstring.

The skipper will be assessed this week ahead of the West Ham game.
