Paul Lambert hopes to have Ron Vlaar available for the clash with Arsenal.
Lambert praised skipper Vlaar for putting himself forward to play at Sunderland despite only training briefly early this week.
Reliable defender Vlaar had previously missed the Fulham, Man Utd, Stoke, Palace and Swansea games aswell as the second half at Southampton.
But Lambert welcomed him back for 70 minutes before the captain was subbed off with a reoccurrence of the calf issue that had kept him out for the five games previously.
Boss Lambert, however, was tentatively optimistic in his post-match briefing, indicating that the problem might not be too severe.
He is keeping his fingers crossed that Vlaar may be fit enough to face the Gunners, with Villa helped by the fact that clash takes place on Monday, rather than Saturday.
He said: "We had Christian and Ron back in big areas of the pitch.
"It was great to see Ron return and Christian has been a big miss too because of his presence.
"Ron came off because he was feeling his calf again. He only trained the other day for the first time.
"But to be fair to him, he put himself forward to play.
"Hopefully it's not too bad. We will have to wait and see.
"If he misses Sheff Utd, that's fine. The most important one is Arsenal. Hopefully he will be okay for the Arsenal game."
