Half-time report

It was a scrappy first period at the Britannia - but Villa looked the most likely to find a breakthrough.

Marc Albrighton continued where he left off against Manchester United by showing more great industry down the right hand side.

An early cross from the Tamworth-born winger fell to Aleksandar Tonev who volleyed into the arms of Asmir Begovic.

Stoke goalkeeper Begovic made another early save after Nathan Baker met Ashley Westwood's inswinger with a diving header.

The biggest talking point of the half came on 26 minutes when Marc Wilson tripped Andreas Weimann, who looked to be through on goal.

However, Potters defender Wilson escaped with a yellow card.

Brad Guzan was called into action on 36 minutes, tipping over a first-time cross from Geoff Cameron which almost sailed straight in.

In the closing stages of the half, Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker made great blocks in quick succession to deny Peter Crouch and Marko Aranautovic.
