Shay Given will join Middlesbrough on loan, subject to Premier League clearance.
Goalkeeper Given is set to link up with Aitor Karanka's squad at The Riverside until December 29.
The 37-year-old is eligible for the home game with Bolton on Saturday.
Middlesbrough are 19th in the Championship but have just appointed former Real Madrid assistant coach Karanka after Tony Mowbray's departure.
Given has found his opportunities limited this season, with Brad Guzan the No.1 for Paul Lambert.
Guzan replaced Given for the clash with Newcastle in September 2012 and hasn't looked back since.
Guzan retained his place in the top-flight team for the rest of the term, although Given did play several cup games, his performance in the 4-1 win over Norwich a stand-out.
The former Celtic and Newcastle keeper, who joined Villa from Manchester City in July 2011, started his claret and blue career with a shutout against Fulham on the opening day of the 2011-12 season.
His first campaign in claret and blue was unfortunately halted in December, as a torn hamstring left him out of the team until January.
It was the job of Guzan to deputise for the injured stopper, who produced a number of fine performances for Villa in his absence.
Given then returned to produce several inspired performances, including man of the match style stopper displays against Liverpool in a 1-1 draw at Anfield and West Bromwich Albion in a 0-0 draw at the Hawthorns.
