Lowton/Bennett in the swing for Aston Villa PL4Sport scheme

Enthusiastic Matt Lowton and Joe Bennett got in the swing of things at the Aston Villa PL4Sport scheme this week.

Lowton and Bennett were on hand at King Edwards VI School in Aston to show off their sporting skills, alongside tennis ace Dan Evans and golf pro Flic Johnson.

The proactive pair excelled in tennis and golf sessions with Evans and Johnson proving to be expert tutors in their respective fields.

Of course, both Evans - who made it through to the US Open third round - and Johnson -a star on both the European and US Tours - are huge claret and blue supporters.

Lowton said: "I had a lot of fun. It was great to meet the kids and join in some of the activities.

"I was much better at golf than tennis, no doubt. I hadn't played tennis before this for more than 10 years! But it was good!

"PL4Sport is an important scheme. Anything that helps get kids into sport has my backing.

"And you never know, one of the children could find a sport they're really good at and go on to play professionally. Without trying, you just don't know."

Bennett added: "I really enjoyed it. I like going to events like this.

"I'm the opposite of Matt - I'm better at tennis than golf. I've played at the Belfry before - but I will stick to tennis after my efforts today!"

Evans said: "It was great to be here for a top initiative that helps kids get involved in sport.

"It was all done in a good spirit and I was impressed with the skills of Matt, Joe and the children who took part."

Johnson added: "It was good fun. I think the game of golf will grow and grow as we build up to the next Olympics, where it will be included again.

"To see the children participating so eagerly was great."

The Aston Villa PL4Sport programme - co-ordinated by Debbi Rawson - uses the power of the club crest to encourage participation in badminton, basketball, hockey, judo, table tennis and girl's football - with golf and tennis added to the roster this term.

Participation in PL4Sport satellite sessions is open to anyone - ages 12-18 - who would like to try one of the sports.

We also have designated disability sessions in judo for the visually-impaired, golf and badminton.

Sessions take place at various locations across the city.

For more information or to find out where your nearest satellite venue is for any of the sports, contact Hannah Hogben on 0121 327 2299.
