Gordon Cowans hopes his Villa U21 side can start turning their positive performances into points when they return to action against Newcastle.
The claret and blues are keen to kickstart their Barclays U21 Premier League campaign at Burton's Pirelli Stadium this evening.
So far this term, Villa have won one, drawn two and lost two in the revamped league competition.
Cowans' team were on top for long periods during their last outing against Sunderland but ended up being held to a 1-1 draw.
The Villa coach wants his players to start pressing home their advantage when on top in games.
"I was happy with the performance against Sunderland," he said.
"The lads worked hard, put themselves about and I couldn't have asked any more of them.
"In the first half we were the better side and dominated possession although we didn't create too many chances.
"But we did play some good football and we scored at a key moment when we were playing well. That is crucial - that you make sure you make it count when you are on top.
"It was disappointing for the lads that they ended up drawing 1-1."
Villa currently sit 20th in the table but have played several games less than all the others teams.
Meanwhile, 13th-placed Newcastle have had a mixed start to their season, winning twice, drawing twice and losing three times.
Last time out, the Magpies were involved in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Fulham.
