Villa slipped to a defeat against Southampton at St Mary's despite skipper Daniel Johnson pulling them back into the match.
It was the Saints who made the better start and, after being cautioned for handling outside the penalty area, Villa goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist recovered to make an excellent double save.
Andras Stieber hit a shot just off target as the claret and blues started to find their feet.
Jordan Turnbull had the ball in the net for Southampton but his effort was ruled out after the referee spotted a foul.
But the home side eventually took the lead on 38 minutes when Omar Rowe drilled home a shot from 12 yards.
Early in the second half, Jake Sinclair drove a shot at goal which went in off Villa defender Kevin Toner to make it 2-0.
Daniel Johnson had two efforts denied by Southampton keeper Chris Johns.
However, it was third time lucky for the Villa skipper who capitalised on a defensive error to pull one back midway through the second half.
Sadly Gordon Cowans' team were unable to find an equaliser and Southampton sealed the win when Turnbull headed home late in the match.
