Antonio Luna admits he's relishing the competition with Joe Bennett for the left-back slot.
Luna and Bennett are set to fight it out for the full-back berth this term.
Luna started the campaign following his move in the summer from Sevilla but Bennett was injured at the time.
The Spaniard played against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool while the former Middlesbrough man came in against Rotherham when Luna injured himself on the eve of the match.
Luna believes the competition with Bennett will help Villa throughout the season and also ensure both players improve their individual games too.
He said: "Having more than one player for each role in the team is normal, especially at a big club like Villa.
"Joe and I are both in the same position. We're both left full-backs.
"We are both competing to get in the team. We are enjoying the competition.
"It's good for everyone. It's good for the team certainly. Competition is so important.
"It brings the best out in everyone. It will bring the best out of me. It will bring the best out of Joe.
"It's always good. If I am doing well in training and Joe is too, the manager will be very happy. It is a decision he will enjoy making at the end of the week.
"It's more difficult when players aren't performing. The manager will be happy for everyone to be playing at their very, very best and then picking the team he wants for each match.
"But it's not about individuals. It's about the squad. All that matters is winning every week, regardless of who plays. We're a squad not a team."
