Lambert: Our newboys are "really good characters"

Paul Lambert is delighted at the top team spirit in the camp, aided by the six newboys who are "great characters" in the dressing room.

Lambert won't get too carried away by the impressive results over the past two weeks in the pre-season programme, as he leads his team to Dublin on Sunday for their penultimate match against Shamrock Rovers.

But he has spoken of his happiness at the way things are progressing ahead of the new 2013-14 campaign.

He said: "It's going really well at the moment. We have had a couple of good games with Crewe and Walsall.

"In those games we have started to look more like ourselves.

"We still have a few weeks to go before the start of the season. But we're doing really fine.

"The game against Walsall was really good. We have two games left now and then before you know it, you're right in it.

"We have the six newboys and the good thing about them is they are good characters. That's more important than anything, allied to the one who were already with us.

"The newboys have bedded in well. They will get used to our game.

"The team spirit is really good, which is important and the crowd are right behind us. It's important we keep driving it on."

Lambert admitted he's relishing the start of the season, which pits Villa against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in succession.

The boss isn't concerned about the tough opening few weeks because he believes results can be unpredictable when a new campaign kicks-off.

He continued: "We certainly have players who can score. That's the big thing we've got.

"We want to try and hit the ground running and we have a really tough game against Arsenal.

"It's a really tough start but you've got to play them. Arsenal is really tough, then we have Chelsea and Liverpool. You've got to play them sometime.

"But it's the start of the season and anything can happen. We will do our best to win."

Lambert also reiterated his delight at securing the future of Christian Benteke, the team's leading scorer last time out.

He added: "He's getting better. He's 22 with a lot to learn.

"He was the main player for us last year with the amount of goals he scored. He's still got a long way to go in the game. But I was delighted we got it resolved."
