Paul Lambert hailed the excellent attacking and solid defensive display as Villa saw off Walsall 5-0.
Lambert was thrilled with the way his claret and blue troops pressed incessantly against the League One side at the Banks's Stadium.
Goals from Fabian Delph, Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke, Jack Grealish and Gary Gardner were enough to produce a five-star performance.
Lambert was delighted with the overall display - also highlighting the clean sheet - and thinks things are progressing nicely ahead of the season opener against Arsenal.
He told AVTV: "It was excellent. We started really well again. We were pressing.
"We play a passing game and we're getting better and better.
"We definitely have goals in us, that's for sure.
"It's important if you can spread the goals around the team too, which we did. It could have been more.
"We were very good. It was pleasing that we kept a clean sheet too. We were solid throughout. We looked really good.
"The good thing was we were pressing throughout the game.
"We are getting better and better. There are a few weeks to go and it's all about that Arsenal game."
Lambert also hailed the fans for their fervour throughout the 90 minutes in the friendly derby.
He continued: "They were fantastic. You can hear them throughout. It doesn't surprise me. It's appreciated."
Lambert also delivered a positive injury update on Aleksandar Tonev [hamstring] and Jores Okore [thigh], revealing his hopes that both would return to training on Friday.
He said, all being well, both could make the trip to Dublin for the Shamrock Rovers game on Sunday.
He added: "Hopefully Aleksandar and Jores will maybe train Friday and then we will see how they are for the game.
"They are two big players for us who will hopefully come back shortly.
"Next up is Shamrock Rovers. We want to get more minutes under the belts of the players and hopefully get no injuries. Then there's one more after that."
