Stiliyan Petrov was in the dugout in his new capacity as assistant development coach for Villa's pre-season friendly win over Boldmere St Michaels.

The former club captain helped U21s head coach Gordon Cowans oversee the 6-3 victory as the club's youngsters stepped up their preparations for the new campaign.

Petrov, who announced his retirement from playing at the end of last season following a battle with acute leukaemia, is already relishing his switch into coaching.

The Bulgarian will assist European Cup winner Cowans this term in the Barclays U21 Premier League.

It's been so far, so good for the two ex-Villa midfielders as their side began pre-season with a 2-0 success at Enfield on Saturday before Tuesday night's nine-goal thriller at Boldmere.

Despite falling behind in the clash at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground, Villa came roaring back with first-half goals from Jack Grealish and Jerell Sellars.

After the break, Daniel Johnson scored from the spot, with substitute Thomas Strain scoring twice and Daniel O'Brien also getting on the scoresheet.
