Boldmere St Michaels 3-6 Villa: Young guns win nine-goal thriller

Villa's youngsters hit non-league side Boldmere St Michaels for six to continue their winning start to pre-season.

Jack Grealish, Jerell Sellars, Daniel Johnson, Thomas Strain [2] and Daniel O'Brien were all on target in front of first team boss Paul Lambert.

Gordon Cowans' team - who began pre-season with a 2-0 win at Enfield on Saturday - fell behind after 12 minutes when Jimmy Mutton pounced from close-range to convert Ricky Baker's free-kick.

But the visitors struck back on 23 minutes courtesy of a neat finish from Grealish.

After collecting Liam Bateman's short corner, the Hall Green-born winger glided towards the edge of the box and curled his low shot into the far corner of the net.

Grealish also played a part in the second, which saw Sellars round off an excellent team move.

On 34 minutes, Callum Robinson raced on to Grealish's pass and produced a precise cutback for Sellars to slot home his second in as many games.

Ex-Villa academy keeper David Bevan kept his former club at bay with three superb saves.

Firstly, he pushed to safety a rising drive from Robinson, before flying across his goal to palm away Johnson's powerful drive at the near post.

And, on the stroke of half-time, the outstretched arm of Bevan kept out an awkward deflected shot from Johnson.

Seven minutes into the second half, Johnson extended Villa's lead from the penalty spot after Sellars was tripped in the box.

Substitute Strain made it four soon after with a delightful looping header after latching on to fellow Aussie Jordan Lyden's ball from the right hand side.

Josh Riley's unstoppable 74th-minute strike made it 4-2 before O'Brien acrobatically volleyed home from six-yards to add Villa's fifth.

Strain bagged a second six minutes from time with arguably the goal of the night - a stunning 25-yard volley.

There was still time for Kirk Smith to pull another one back for The Mikes.
