Guzan: My player of the year awards count for nothing now

Brad Guzan insists his player of the year awards after a splendid 2012-13 season count for nothing as he gets set for another campaign between the sticks in claret and blue.

Guzan was exemplary as he scooped the two major honours at the end-of-season dinner.

But the shot-stopper says he's not one for looking back but rather striving for future success personally and collectively.

He said: "It was truly an honour to win player of the season from the players and the fans. But you're nothing without your team-mates. They helped me. I helped them.

"When you create that spirit and togetherness day in and day out, that's what creates a good team.

"Now it's time to start again. There's no point dwelling on anything that happened for me last season. That's always the case.

"No-one cares about last season now. No-one will remember last season when this season starts.

"You have the summer to reflect on things but now that time is done and dusted.

"I have put that well and truly behind me. It's time to start over.

"That means you have to prove yourself all over again. That's to yourself, to the coaches and to your team-mates. We have to prove ourselves as a team to the league and other teams too.

"We have to prove to everyone that we have learnt and progressed from the experiences of last season - that's good and bad.

"We have to build on things.

"For me, it's about total focus and setting those high standards from the first minute of the first training session. If you do that, you have a chance to be successful.

"You certainly can't rest on past achievements, individually or as a team.

"You start fresh and you fight for a spot in the side. You have to be committed to the cause."

Snap up the home goalkeeper jersey that Guzan will be wearing next season.
