Lambert: We'll be ready for exciting season opener

Paul Lambert is already eyeing the first weekend of the season at Arsenal and promises his side will go there with "energy and enthusiasm."

Lambert is relishing the trip to the Emirates Stadium, which is followed by a clash at Liverpool at Villa Park soon after.

Villa boss Lambert isn't concerned about the ferocity of the initial fixtures, saying you have to play the top sides at some point in the season.

Instead, the boss prefers to focus on the way his side will be ready - and raring to go - for the season opener.

Villa, of course, narrowly went down 2-1 at Arsenal in his first season in charge, only losing due to a late goal, with the scoreline flattering the hosts.

Lambert believes that will also buoy his team.

He said: "You have to be ready.

"People have asked me the question before - when do you prefer to play them? You have to play them some time.

"We've got to go to Arsenal on the first day. We were unlucky down there last year.

"The thing is you go there and first day of the season everybody is probably expecting Arsenal to win being the home side and the team they are.

"But we'll certainly go down there and be ready for it.

"We played well down there last year. It was only the last five minutes that we conceded a goal.

"We will go there with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of energy for the game. So we'll go there and do our best to try and win."
