All the media attention revolved around Christian Benteke on the final day of the transfer window in August 2012 - and, rightly so, given his impressive goals ratio in the following months.

But the transfer of Ashley Westwood didn't get as many column inches in the national newspapers but his impact was also massive in a campaign when a young, emerging team came alive.

Westwood was overjoyed as he signed his four-year-deal with the claret and blues and promised to take his chance.

He said: "This is a fantastic football club, a massive club and I can't wait to get started really.

"It's a bit surreal right now but I'll get out training with the lads and take it in my stride."

He certainly did that, impressing early on his Villa career.

He had to wait a couple of weeks for his debut as his signing coincided with an international break.

But eventually it came as he entered the action as a substitute against Swansea and he kept the ball moving impressively in the middle ground as Villa emerged victorious 2-0.

Boss Paul Lambert was impressed with what he saw.

He added: "Ashley has come from League One but you wouldn't think it! I threw him on and he did brilliantly."

Westwood also came on in the away clash with Southampton but could do little to stop the Saints marching to a 4-1 win on home soil.

He was an unused sub against West Brom, Tottenham and Fulham before making his first start away at Sunderland.

Westwood was simply sensational as he put in a mammoth performance to help Villa to a 1-0 win, Gabby Agbonlahor scoring the only goal.

That sparked a run in the team, which saw him impress against Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Reading, QPR and Stoke.

During this period he also showed his class off the field, winning the EA SPORTS 'Most Wanted Need for Speed' event at Bodymoor Heath, seeing off the likes of Barry Bannan, Gary Gardner and Darren Bent.
