Brad Guzan won players and supporters player of the year at the club's lavish end-of-season awards dinner in the Holte Suite.

USA ace Guzan also made it into the BBC Sport team of the year, ahead of the likes of David De Gea, Petr Cech and Joe Hart.

But it might have been so different had Paul Lambert not acted quickly in securing the goalkeeping star on a new three-year-deal ahead of the USA Tour in July.

Guzan was released at the end of the previous term but Lambert moved fast to resign the stopper before jetting out to Philadelphia, Chicago and Portland.

Lambert said at the time: "I watched Brad in some of his games he played and he was excellent.

"I know he's always had that stigma of being the No.2 behind some really good goalkeepers here.

"But when you come back at the start of the season nobody knows what's going to happen and it depends on whoever does well."

Guzan was equally thrilled to be back, stressing that the vision of Lambert was key to the move.

He added: "First and foremost it was the discussion I had with the manager.

"I respected and enjoyed what he had to say and for me it was about getting a fair look in terms of making an impression on the team.

"So obviously after having that discussion and knowing what this club is all about and how big it is and where he wants to take it, then for me personally to be able to get opportunities to make my mark, it was exciting.

"After those conversations I was looking forward to coming back to the club."

Guzan returned for training in Philadelphia before playing in the clash with Union.

The team then jetted off to his hometown of Chicago and he played the final ten minutes against Fire, coming on to a rapturous ovation.

Guzan saved the vital shoot-out penalty to give Villa victory over Timbers in Portland while, domestically, he also played in the pre-season friendly at Nottingham Forest.
