Match report: Manchester City Ladies 1-1 Villa Ladies

Villa Ladies picked up a point at Man City Ladies on the final day - but they will feel frustrated not to have collected all three.

After back-to-back defeats, the lime-green girls forced the game on to the home team, attacking at every opportunity.

Winger Emma Follis was in sparkling form and proved to be the catalyst for the stirring performance.

It was level at the break although the away side should have been ahead, Follis seeing a shot brilliantly saved after a typical pacey run while Dani Petrovic and Jade Richards were both denied with fizzing headers and Chloe Jones saw a vicious strike fly just over.

Typical, after all that dominance, Man City Ladies took the lead against the run of play, a header bobbling in at the back post after sloppy defending by Joe Hunt's side.

But Villa Ladies response was instant, Carly Davies - with her first touch - firing home after a great ball through from the composed and classy Richards.

The away team still had chances to win the game.

Maddy Cusack bent an effort wide, Richards hit the bar from a corner and Follis, Davies and Jones had long range efforts saved by the agile keeper.

Boss Hunt said: "The team was very good.

"After Tuesday I knew they'd respond and put a good performance in.

"We should've won the game comfortably. We had plenty of chances to win but were denied by the keeper or the woodwork.

"We didn't deserve to go a goal down but sometimes you don't get what you deserve.

"Our response to going behind was terrific. We peppered their goal and committed players forward at every opportunity.

"Fair play to Carly too. She was thrown on to get us something and did within 10 seconds.

"Our midfield three were very good, Katy's experience was invaluable. She patrolled the areas in front of Dani and Jade which allowed Maddy and Abbeyleigh to get closer to Chloe.

"Emma was outstanding. She is playing with confidence at the moment so it's a shame the season has finished.

"A sixth placed finish is not what we targeted at the start of the season. We've fallen below where we should be.

"We've dropped points all season when we should've won the games.

"But these experiences will make us stronger for next season.

"Remember, though, that we have brought the League Cup to Villa Park so it hasn't been a bad season."

VILLA LADIES: Walsh, Cooper (Davies), Lowe, Moran, Petrovic, Richards, Follis, Stringer, Jones, Cusack, Fergusson (Merrick). Subs not used - Merritt, Crackle, Courtney.
