Stan Collymore has backed Lambert's Lions to kick-on next season after Villa secured their Barclays Premier League status.
Arsenal defeated Wigan to send the Latics down and keep Sunderland and Villa up.
But, in reality, Villa guaranteed safety themselves with a terrific run of results over the past few months.
Collymore says that is testament to the "character" of the players.
Our former striker thinks that fantastic form bodes well for the future.
He said: "Five wins in the last eight games is an impressive record and is testament to the character of the players.
"We have talked all season about the youthful nature of Paul Lambert's team but when you get to this stage of the season it doesn't matter whether you are 35 or 17.
"If you can win pressure games against teams like Stoke City, Sunderland and Norwich City, it shows you believe in each other.
"The manager, of course, has had faith in them all season, even during the bad times.
"He has gone about things in the way he believes is right, and the results these past few weeks have justified his approach.
"We are now seeing a core of young, happy players who understand what Aston Villa is all about and that was clearly evident in the magnificent 6-1 thrashing of Sunderland.
"Now we are safe, I think most of us are confident the lads can really kick on next season.
"They have got better and better as the campaign has progressed and they can use the past few weeks as a platform to greater achievements."
