Villa Ladies were undone by the "finer details" as they were seen off 3-0 by title-chasing Sunderland Ladies.
Joe Hunt's side looked comfortable for much of the first period before conceding a sloppy goal just before half-time.
The newly-crowned League Cup winners were then picked off with two goals early in the second period, which effectively ended the game as a contest.
Hunt refused to criticise his upwardly-mobile side for the defeat, instead promoting how far they had come and how the loss would lead to lessons learned in the future.
Hunt also hailed the quality of Sunderland Ladies, predicting they would go on to claim the League Championship.
Hunt said: "We put up a stubborn performance.
"The goal on half-time was a real bad one to concede. That led to us to chasing the game and Sunderland Ladies to their credit picked us off.
"They are a really good team and they will definitely be champions this season.
"Mick Mulhern deserves a lot of praise because he has had some horrendous luck with injuries this season but has a great squad.
"We are in a building process with our squad. Some of our players will have learned some good lessons, not just in this game but throughout the season as a while.
"It's not just the younger ones either but senior players too.
"They have had to adjust to the way we want to play. They will be stronger for it next season and we want to be challenging Sunderland Ladies next term.
"I can't criticise the players. They represent the club really well.
"The little details were the difference in this match but we'll get better.
"We have two games left this season. We are at home to Coventry Ladies on Tuesday and then we have a trip to Manchester City next Sunday.
"We want to go out in style and finish as high as possible."
