Lambert admitted there were decisions in the match that massively impacted on the result - notably the sending off of Christian Benteke.

He felt his side were deservedly on top until the Belgian hotshot's dismissal.

And the Villa boss said his players couldn't have given any more in an absorbing contest.

Vlaar praised Villa's first half performance and said the team showed tremendous spirit.

The Dutch defender admitted the red card shown to Benteke was a game-changer.

He also described the "goosebumps" he felt when the crowd sang retiring skipper Stiliyan Petrov's name during the post-match lap of honour.

You can also check out the post-match thoughts on European Cup-winning duo Ken McNaught and Tony Morley, who shared AVTV co-commentary duties for the clash.
