Norwich 1-2 Villa: Lambert: Players showed huge mental strength

Paul Lambert hailed the mental strength of his young lions as they roared to a huge 2-1 victory away at Norwich.

Gabby Agbonlahor opened the scoring with a fantastic strike before Grant Holt equalised from the spot.

But the claret and blues never gave up and scored a terrific winner via that man Agbonlahor once again, who took his tally to 62 goals in the Premier League.

Lambert was impressed with the courage on display from his side after the exertions in the week of the exhausting 6-1 win over Sunderland.

He said: "It was a huge victory, very much so.

"The effort after Monday night was absolutely outstanding. We gave it absolutely everything.

"We looked pretty tired but we hung in.

"I thought it was a big effort because the lads were tired. We went with the same team. But all credit to them.

"They were mentally strong to get over the line.

"In the second half we had chances and I thought we could have had more.

"We had two or three efforts before Gabby even scored. Even Andi had one at the end where he tried to square it to Christian.

"But some of the football we played was excellent.

"It was a big, big effort because of what happened on Monday."

Lambert admitted he's been happy with the form of his aspiring and emerging team since January and sees improvement each week.

He continued: "I think we have been playing well since the Bradford thing. We started to get a grip of it.

"We have been playing very well of late. Look at the form and it's extremely high at the minute.

"Every big game we have asked questions of them, they have done it. I am proud.

"After Bradford we have not looked like a team that is down there. The lads have been outstanding."

Asked whether Villa are safe, he added: "I don't know. You keep going don't you.

"Everyone says 40 points is the magical mark. We have to wait and see.

"It's another huge win. We have had massive games against Sunderland and Norwich and to pick up six points is very pleasing.

"We are growing together. We are getting better and better with every single game.

"The big thing if we get safe will be the mental side of the game because they have taken some beatings and just kept going.

"They haven't got their head down and we are playing football which is definitely worthy of staying in this league."
