Paul Lambert says man-of-the-moment Christian Benteke is in exalted company in striving to reach Peter Withe's record haul.
Benteke has eighteen goals in the top-flight and is chasing down Withe, who managed twenty in 1980-81 - the last time a Villa hitman bagged that total.
Lambert admits it would be quite some achievement to match or better Withe.
He said: "What Christian has done with his goalscoring exploits has been great. He might have had a few more.
"His all-round game is good. He's playing really well and he's scoring which is the bonus.
"If he's in that sort of company - along with Withe - it shows what he's doing."
Lambert says Benteke is "riding the crest of a wave" at present but stressed the powerful hitman is still a "work in progress."
He added: "Christian is loving his football at the minute, he's on the crest of a wave, he can't do anything wrong and you have spells like that in your career.
"You look at some of his performances and he's been unplayable at certain times.
"It's about doing it next year and then the next year and then the next year and then you can say he's arrived.
"But he's only a young boy who's learning his trade. He's only 22 years old.
"I think if you asked him he would tell you he's got so much to learn.
"Once he does it year after year after year then we can turn around and say we have a proper player.
"I have said it before, if Christian can keep his feet on the ground and be as humble as he is regardless of the success he has, he can be a right top player.
"He's still not the finished article by any stretch. As long as he keeps his feet on the ground and continues to be humble, then his career will start to rise."
