Jordan Bowery was a surprise selection in the starting XI for the game with Stoke.

But the powerful forward more than justified Paul Lambert's faith with a performance of desire and dynamism.

Bowery didn't give the Potters defenders a moment's peace as he ran himself into the ground for the claret and blue cause.

But it wasn't all about endeavour and energy, as the young striker had a big bearing on the outcome of the contest.

Bowery was floored in the opposition box early on but still had the presence of mind to lay the ball off to Matt Lowton who delivered for Gabby Agbonlahor to open the scoring.

And Bowery had two chances of his own to score his first goal in new club colours.

He slipped at the vital moment as Andreas Weimann's strike cannoned off the post while he did little wrong when one-on-one with the goalkeeper at the start of the second half.

Unfortunately he found Asmir Begovic in fine form to tip away his goalbound effort.

Boss Lambert was certainly delighted with the performance of the 21-year-old.

He said: "Jordan has not played for long time.

"He did brilliantly for goal. Overall I thought he was absolutely outstanding. I can't praise him enough."
