Match report: Charlton Ladies 1-0 Villa Ladies

Boss Joe Hunt admitted he was "absolutely gutted" after seeing Villa Ladies produce a fine performance but ultimately go down 1-0 at Charlton Ladies.

It was a definite case of what might have been as his side hit the woodwork on numerous occasions in search of an equaliser.

Villa Ladies started fast against the Addicks, Maddy Cusack hitting the bar after great build-up play from Emma Follis.

Jade Richards then headed over an inswinging corner from Erin Vaughan before Tash Merritt send a driven shot just over.

Villa Ladies were dominating and getting in some very good positions but they couldn't find that final killer ball.

Charlton Ladies took the lead one minute before the break, a mishit shot looping over the helpless goalkeeper Natalie Courtney.

It was a scrappy second half, with both sides strong in the tackle and refusing to give an inch in the battle for supremacy.

But Villa Ladies had the better opportunities.

Carly Davies missed a great opportunity to draw level after going through one against one before smashing a shot against the bar some minutes later.

Lively forward Follis also struck the bar after a jinking run as Villa Ladies failed to make the vital breakthrough.

Hunt said: "I couldn't ask any more of the team.

"Sometimes you don't get what you deserve and this was one of those days.

"We hit the woodwork three times and had a great one on one chance as well as some lovely deliveries from out wide.

"The ball just wouldn't go in. The team are gutted we lost the game because they did enough to win it.

"We were good. But that's how it's going for us at the moment. On another day we would win the game by four or five.

"We can take a lot of positives from that game. We tried to play. We were committed to the tackle all around the pitch and never got intimidated by some rough treatment.

"The game was won and lost by the little details. We didn't convert our chances and the one time we failed to get pressure on the ball we were punished by a fluke of a goal.

"It's a tough game but I know the team will train hard this week and put another good performance in at home to Barnet on Sunday."
