Villa Ladies preview: Hunt hails Follis versatility

Boss Joe Hunt has paid tribute to Emma Follis as Villa Ladies head to Charlton Ladies this afternoon.

Hunt has utilised pacy Follis as a winger all season and she has really excelled.

But now he's looking to play her as a point striker, with other midfielders behind to support her.

He played this way in the League Cup win over Blackburn Ladies and looks set to do the same today.

He said: "Last week we played some nice football at times. Emma played as the point striker with Chloe Jones and Beth Merrick in support of her.

"There was a lovely blend of pace, skill and precision passing from the three forwards but they were supported well by Abbeyleigh Stringer, Maddy Cusack and the always impressive Tash Merrick.

"This weekend will be tough for us. We beat Charlton 2-1 at home earlier in the season.

"We played extremely well for 60 minutes but then gave away another sloppy penalty - that's the story of our season really.

"But I know if we apply ourselves we'll be fine.

"Emma has been in scintillating form since returning to the team in early November. She's a pleasure to coach and manage.

"Playing her through the middle has given us an extra dimension. She can come in short to collect the ball or spin in behind and use her pace.

"She's a clever girl so will make it hard for the centre-backs.

"Hopefully we'll be able to get the ball to her so she can cause some havoc in the Charlton backline."

Hunt revealed that the League Cup win over Blackburn Ladies - and the return to training of long-term injury casualty Sherry McCue has given the players a lift going into today's game.

He added: "The victory put a bounce in the step of the squad. We've been boosted with players returning over the last few weeks. This week we've had Sherry back in full training.

"This weekend has come too soon for her but it's nice to have her back on the training pitch.

"She'll be pushing for her place back in the squad over the next few weeks."

Dani Petrovic [suspended] and Megan Walsh [ankle] both miss the game while Natalie Gibson and Hayley Crackle have missed out on the squad.

Squad: Courtney, Cooper, Mannion, Lowe, Vaughan, Richards, Merritt, Jones, Stringer, Cusack, Moran, Fergusson, Merrick, Follis, Clarke, Davies.
