Brad Guzan admits the competition with Shay Given is helping him revel between the posts.
Guzan is playing well, ultimately, because he needs to for the team in a precarious situation in the top-flight.
But he says the performances of Given in training - as the Republic of Ireland international pushes to regain his No.1 spot - keeps him on his toes too.
Guzan has been a revelation since coming into the side for the game at Newcastle in September 2012 and really came to the fore in the win over QPR.
USA ace Guzan made three world-class saves in the first-half to give Villa the platform to go on and win 3-2.
But the 28-year-old says he never has chance to rests on his laurels.
He said: "For me, it's nice to be playing consistent football in the Premier League.
"Obviously that was the goal coming over here. It took a bit longer to have that opportunity but now it's continuing to prove myself each week.
"It's very competitive in terms of fighting for spots. When you have the shirt you have to continue to get better and do your job and keep it and continue to fight.
"You need that at a football club."
