Reading 1-2 Villa Mars MOTM: Select your top performer

There was no shortage of contenders for man of the match after the gritty 2-1 win at Reading.

Paul Lambert described the run-in as ten cup finals and his side had their hands on the trophy after this exciting encounter.

They played with effort, endeavour, purpose, skill and sense as they took the throne from the Royals.

Yacouba Sylla made his first start in claret and blue colours and he was a revelation in the middle ground.

All the talk from the dressing room pre-match centred around Sylla's appetite for tackling - and this was in evidence - but the central ace also showed a range of passing out of place with the nerves he must have been feeling.

Ashley Westwood was beside him and put on a show, with crisp, incisive use of the ball and nipping at the feet of opposition players like a piranha.

Christian Benteke was back to his very best, with a great goal - Villa's 1,000th in the Premier League - as well as superb hold-up play in the air and on the floor.

Gabby Agbonlahor fired home the winner but he worked his socks off throughout, along with Andi Weimann who shows superhuman levels of energy at times.

Ron Vlaar and Ciaran Clark marshalled the back four alongside Nathan Baker and Matt Lowton while Barry Bannan - making his first appearance since recovering from a hip problem - looked like he'd never been away.

Remember the voting goes towards the end of season Terrace Trophy award, sponsored by Mars.

Past recipients include Stan Petrov, Gareth Barry, James Milner and Dennis Mortimer.
