Vlaar joins Fergusson to promote International Women's Day

Villa are celebrating International Women's Day by helping raise awareness of Oxfam's support for women around the world.

The club are doing their bit to raise awareness of Oxfam's projects, with Villa Ladies star Livy Fergusson acting as our International Women's Day ambassador.

Captain Ron Vlaar leant his support to Fergusson in helping promote International Women's Day.

Fergusson is one of the rising stars of the Villa Ladies team, graduating to the senior setup after helping the U17s to the league title and an unbeaten campaign last season.

"It is great to see the club doing its bit to encourage women to take part in sport," said Vlaar.

"I hear the Villa Ladies team are doing well at the moment and it is very good that the club are doing so much to promote and support women's football."

Fergusson added: "As a player, I have seen for myself how powerfully football can bring people together.

"International Women's Day is a great opportunity to come together to celebrate and promote women's rights and, at the same time, highlight the difficulties that many are still facing in their daily lives, both in the UK and overseas".

As well as running a successful senior ladies team, Villa operates girls sides at U11, U13, U15 and U17 levels.

This week the club staged an U13 girl's tournament while in June we will be hosting our annual girls football open day where seven to seventeen-year-olds can experience coaching from Villa's development coaches.

As well as football, Villa also encourage female participation in sports such as judo, badminton, volleyball and table tennis through the Premier League 4 Sport scheme.

Oxfam have initiatives up and down the country, with the local event taking place at Redpoint Climbing Centre in Birmingham, which takes place tonight at 7pm.
