Villa 2-1 West Ham: Lambert - That was a "massive, huge" win

Paul Lambert said the win over West Ham will give his team plenty of confidence as they eye progress up the Barclays Premier League table.

Lambert described the 2-1 victory as a "huge win" - especially given how results went for the likes of Wigan, QPR, Newcastle and Reading.

He paid tribute to the team's defensive solidity with Nathan Baker, Ron Vlaar and Ciaran Clark starring and the attacking excellence of Charles N'Zogbia and Christian Benteke.

He said: "I thought we deserved to win the game. It was a bit edgy when they scored but we deserved to win.

"It will be great for confidence. Everyone is willing us to do it. The crowd again were fabulous. The lads have given it a right go.

"It was a massive win, huge win, especially with the results yesterday.

"West Ham are a difficult side to play against with the height that they've got. I thought Nathan was exceptional, Ciaran and Ron too. They were excellent.

"The last few games they have thrown their bodies into things which I think you have to do.

"Darren has cleared the ball off the line, Nathan has made several blocks, Ron has made some blocks, Ciaran and Brad also. I am delighted with them. They were excellent.

"The free-kick from Charles was world-class, an absolute world-class goal. He's got that. He's a really talented footballer.

"To be fair, over the last couple of months he has been excellent. He was unlucky because he had a bad injury with his knee. That kept him out for six weeks or so.

"Since he's come back into the fold he's been excellent. He has been very good.

"These type of players are not easy to come by.

"And the big man Benteke has been brilliant. He had a hard week going away with the national team and coming back. That's 15 goals for him now.

"He's been absolutely brilliant on and off the pitch, he's been excellent. He's been great for me and the club.

"We know what we have to do now. We have twelve games. Every match is tough. But that's a huge win."

Lambert also revealed Gabby Agbonlahor and Karim El Ahmadi missed the game because of a sickness bug.

He added: "I found out this morning. Gabby and Karim had a virus. There has been a sickness bug at the club.

"Ashley had it during the week. They had it last night and this morning. It was a blow."

Meanwhile, Charles N'Zogbia was subbed late on with a calf injury but Lambert expects him to recover in time for Arsenal.
