Ron Vlaar reflected on the 2-2 draw with West Brom and said: "We can build on that performance."
Vlaar was thrilled to back in the claret and blue backline after a frustrating time out injured with his troublesome calf.
And the influential skipper was pleased with the display of the team in the Baggies clash, especially in a pulsating first-half.
Vlaar was naturally disappointed with the finish but is confident things are on the up for Villa.
He said: "It felt really good to be playing again. Being injured is frustrating. But being back on the pitch gives such a good feeling.
"It's too bad we couldn't win. We played very well in the first-half. We should have scored a third and maybe a fourth goal. But we didn't.
"Then their first goal came just a little too quick after half-time. But we did well. It's too bad they made the equaliser.
"We scored some really quality goals. There was great movement from Christian for the first. He turned and his shot was amazing.
"The second goal started from the back with Matty. Gabby made a great goal at the end of it.
"That was very good and it gives us something we can build on."
Vlaar's powerful performance was there for all to see as he battled brilliantly with Albion star striker Romelu Lukaku.
It was a tussle he thoroughly enjoyed.
He added: "Lukaku is a good striker. Every team has a good striker.
"He's very good strong so it was good to get the battles with him. I think it went well."
