Villa v Ipswich: Holman - Herd is a "big asset"

Brett Holman has hailed Chris Herd as a "big asset."

He thinks that's the case for two reasons - first his winning mentality and second his immense versatility.

Like all Aussies, Herd hates losing with a passion and that desire and drive transmits on to other members of the first-team squad, according to Holman.

Villa's all-action midfielder also thinks his fellow countryman's positional adaptability - he's able to play at right-back, right midfielder, centre-half and central midfield - makes him a key squad member.

He said: "Chris is a real tough competitor and his versatility helps him, as well as being a big asset for the squad.

"He had a rough pre-season with injuries and that always makes it hard to get your fitness levels up.

"But you can see he has a lot to give, a lot to contribute to the team and he's given some big performances for the club when it's been needed.

"The fact he can run all day is testament to the work he puts in on the training pitch and he has some outstanding qualities - he has a good leap on him, for example, and he can sneak in for a goal or two as well.

"Obviously, you want everybody in your squad to be stepping up to the plate and Chris has that strong mentality to do that."
