Coventry Ladies 0-5 Villa Ladies: Chick and Gibbo on top form

Villa Ladies progressed into the quarter-finals of the County Cup with a professional display away at Coventry Sphinx Ladies.

Natalie Gibson and Livy 'Chick' Fergusson [pictured] both bagged a brace and Maddie Cusack scored the other as Villa Ladies ran out 5-0 winners.

Gibson opened the scoring on 19 minutes with a brilliant 25-yard free-kick which rifled into the top corner.

Fergusson made it two as she calmly slotted the ball away on 38 minutes.

Flying winger Fergusson didn't waste time for her second, finishing brilliant - following a lovely diagonal ball from Erin Vaughan - just two minutes later.

Gibson bagged her own second just after half-time, rolling the ball into the bottom corner from the penalty spot. This was awarded after Cusack had been crudely fouled in the box.

Cusack herself got in on the act soon after, blasting the ball home brilliantly from just outside the area to complete the scoring.

Boss Joe Hunt said: "The County Cup gives us the opportunity to get all 16 players on the pitch as it's roll-on roll-off substitutions. Apart from Natalie Courtney in goal, each player got an hour on the pitch.

"Credit to Coventry Sphinx Ladies, they made it really hard for us. They had great shape and energy and really made us work for it.

"We scored five very good goals but frustratingly missed some great opportunities.

"I wanted us to be more ruthless but at times we overplayed rather than picked the right pass or shot.

"But give credit to the girls, it's a knockout competition and we're through to the quarter-finals.

"It's another clean sheet, that's six on the bounce now and it's nice to finish the year with a win.

"The players have been incredible for the last three months, applying themselves in every session and every match. It's nice too that all the players have stepped up at some point.

"Over the past few weeks, Natalie Gibson has worked hard to get back in to contention and has proven what a great finisher she is.

"In this game her free kick was pure class. It would have beaten any goalkeeper. She was always involved in our best periods of play and looked really sharp and inventive.

"Emma Follis was again a joy to watch. I hope the Christmas period doesn't slow her down - the girl is getting better and better each week!

"Emma, Liv, Beth and Mel all looked sharp today in support of Natalie."

Villa Ladies: Courtney, Vaughan, Lowe, Moran, Mannion, Richards, Follis, Stringer, Gibson, Merrick. Subs [all used throughout] - Lawley, Crackle, Merritt, Cusack, Fergusson.
