Liverpool v Villa: Lambert hails Westwood as Villa's Scholes

Paul Lambert has paid midfielder Ashley Westwood the ultimate compliment - by hailing him as Villa's answer to Paul Scholes.

Deadline day signing Westwood has been a revelation for the claret and blues since making his first start in the victory over Sunderland.

The former Crewe Alexandra skipper went on to cement a place in central midfield with a string of sparkling performances.

His brilliant form also led to him sharing the November Player of the Month award with fellow new recruit Christian Benteke.

Lambert is looking forward to welcoming Westwood back into the squad for Saturday's trip to Liverpool after he was cup tied for the midweek Capital One Cup triumph at Norwich City.

Ahead of this weekend's clash at Anfield, the Villa boss spoke in glowing terms about his new midfield pass-master.

He went as far as likening the 22-year-old's performances over the past few weeks to those of Manchester United legend Scholes.

"Ashley has been outstanding for us," said Lambert.

"We couldn't play him at Norwich. We've got good footballers in the side and, for the game at Norwich, we had one lad back at the training ground.

"The biggest compliment I can give is he is like a mini Scholes at the moment, in terms of the way he is performing."

Interestingly Scholes was one of the players Westwood most admired when he was making his way in the game in his formative years.

He added: "When we played Man Utd my brother had tears in his eyes just watching me out there with the likes of Scholes and Carrick.

"It's really weird. Carrick is the player I've based my game on. I was in the tunnel before the Man Utd game and I looked to my left and I was standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Rooney and Van Persie.

"It was just crazy. For one brief moment I thought: 'Am I dreaming this?'

"But the funny thing is that the minute you step out there you just cut it all out."

Make sure you back the boys against Tottenham.
