Charles N'Zogbia is back in training ahead of Villa's clash against Stoke - but Ron Vlaar and Enda Stevens remain doubtful.
N'Zogbia has been sidelined with a knee injury since the end of October.
But he resumed training with the Villa squad on Thursday and is hoping to force his way into Paul Lambert's plans for the Potters game.
Skipper Vlaar, who went off injured during the goalless draw with Arsenal a fortnight ago, is still struggling with a calf problem.
Joe Bennett is definitely out.
"It's the same squad that more or less travelled down to QPR," said Lambert.
"Charles is back training. Ron is still a doubt and I'm not too hopeful he will be fit.
"N'Zogbia trained yesterday for the first time since he's been out."
Lambert is set to have his left-back options significantly boosted next week with Stevens and Bennett both expected to return.
Stevens missed out on last weekend's draw at Queens Park Rangers with an ankle injury.
Summer signing Bennett saw a surgeon about the leg injury which has kept him out of action for the past month.
"Joe saw the surgeon yesterday and he might train next week," added the Villa manager.
"The same with Enda - maybe Saturday is a bit early, but he will hopefully be fit for next week."
