Newcastle U21 v Villa U21: Young guns look to build on Utd win

Villa's U21 side are looking to follow up their magnificent win at Manchester United with a repeat performance at Newcastle on Sunday.

The boys in claret and blue go into the clash at Northumberland FA [kick-off 11am] in third place in Group 2 of the Barclays U21 Premier League.

Gordon Cowans' team go into the Newcastle game on the back of consecutive victories over United and Sunderland.

Several players who are likely to be involved against the Magpies also played in the stunning midweek victory over Sporting Lisbon in the NextGen Series.

A win in the North East would lift the Villa youngsters back into second place with home games against Man United and Tottenham still to come.

Coach Cowans is hoping his side can build on the Red Devils performance, which saw Jordan Graham score the winner from the penalty spot.

"It was a great result to go to a place like that and win," said Cowans.

"As a player those are the teams you want to do well against.

"For such a young side to perform the way they did, I thought they were outstanding.

"Jordan did very well on the wing. He did what he is good at - getting at defenders which is his strength."

Villa hope to have Daniel Johnson back after he returned from his loan spell at Yeovil.

Daniel Devine and Andras Stieber missed the previous game through injury, while Courtney Cameron is on loan at Rotherham.
