Paul Lambert was proud of his players on the final whistle - and he believes the fans were too.
Lambert hailed his team for the way they more than matched the league leaders in an enthralling game at Villa Park.
The manager also praised the supporters for the way they created a cauldron of noise throughout the ninety minutes.
Home fans applauded the players at the end of the game and Lambert thinks that's as a result of the effort of the team and the quality of football on show.
He believes the fans recognise that progress is being made.
He said: "I think we have been playing well. We can take a lot of belief from that performance .
"If they keep showing that enthusiasm and that hunger for the game? Look at the crowd's reaction. The crowd is always your marker.
"People see what we are trying to do. The crowd I thought were brilliant I really did.
"I've been looking forward to getting it like that since I came. My God, when that gets going its some atmosphere that's for sure.
"I think the fans will give the players time. The fans know football. They were brought up with football.
"We don't have long ball players in the side, just footballers! The crowd see that and stick with it. The future's really good."
