Villa v Man Utd: Lambert calls for "positive and sensible" approach

By Paul Brown

Paul Lambert wants Villa to give it "a right good go" against Manchester United - but not in gung-ho fashion.

Lambert is eager for his players to retain the belief picked up in wins over Swindon and Sunderland and take the game to the Red Devils.

But he urged his team to play with their heads also and show immense levels of concentration.

The gaffer thinks Villa will need a bit of luck too, if they are to emerge victorious.

He said: "I think that on any given day you never know what happen.

"The game is something we'll look forward to. The stadium will be jam-packed and the atmosphere will be great. On any given day you just never know what can happen.

"The onus is always on the home team. We will be making the running because of the amount of people that come and drive you on.

"Manchester United are a top side but equally you don't want to be buried in your own half for 90 minutes. You have to try to do something in the game.

"We will look forward to the atmosphere. I have always said if you can get Villa Park going it is a great place to play. We haven't just got one of the best teams in Britain coming, but one of the best teams in Europe.

"You have to go and impose yourself on the game and try to win.

"It will be great. We are at home, I always say the onus is on the home team and we've got to give it a go.

"I think every game is really tough but when Man Utd come it is a special game. Everyone wants to beat them because they are the top of the tree. It is a great occasion for us.

"The stadium will be vibrant. There will be a massive crowd and it will be up to us to try and give them a problem.

"We're on not a bad little run at the moment. We are doing really fine. They are a young team but they are starting to get there I think. It was a great win at Sunderland.

"But if you go gung-ho against Manchester United, they will pick you off. That's me being realistic but you have to be patient at certain times and really concentrate and hope you get the breaks.

"But you've got to give it a go as well, we're at home and will do everything we can to try and win.

"I think you have to be realistic about what you are going to play against, but at the same time that should not deflect from your own strength that you want to go to try to win.

"You need a bit of luck too. You need that in football - a bit of luck along the way.

"We have to believe that we can win. The belief in the football team at the minute is there.

"We are going to have to play well against them that's for sure. But on any given day anything can happen."

Make sure you're here to roar on the lads against Manchester United.
