On this day: Villa celebrate work of army at Norwich game

Looking back through the claret and blue history books for the news items, events, birthdays, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day.

Villa marked the momentous work of the military with a themed 'Armed Forces Day.'

The Norwich game was dedicated to our glorious guys and gals doing their bit for queen and country at home and abroad.

Personnel from the 159 Supply Regiment from Telford were on site to provide activities for Villa fans in the Indoor Academy.

There were demonstrations by the army events team - and there was an assault course and paintball target gallery available before the match too.

Solihull-born Lance Corporal Matt Croucher GC was also a special guest on the day.

Croucher was awarded the George Cross for extreme bravery when he threw himself on a Taliban tripwire grenade to save his comrades as part of a reconnaissance mission near Sangin in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

He presented the matchball to the referee before the game and also formed part of the guard of honour before kick-off.

In the game itself, Darren Bent and Gabby Agbonlahor were in lethal form as Villa returned to win ways in a pulsating game against Norwich City.

Bent was on target twice, taking his total to 14 in 27 games since his club record move from Sunderland in January.

And apart from setting up both those goals, Agbonlahor grabbed his own fifth of the season to stake a claim for a place in Fabio Capello's England squad.

In Brief

1881 Villa thrashed Nottingham Forest 4-1 in an FA Cup first round clash at Perry Barr.

1989 Villa won a fifth successive game, thrashing Everton 6-2 at Villa Park. Goals from Ian Olney (2), David Platt (2), Gordon Cowans and Kent Nielsen secured he points.

Make sure you're here to roar on the lads against Manchester United.
