Man City v Villa: Lambert aiming to give it a right good go

By Paul Brown

Paul Lambert is eyeing progress in the Capital One Cup as he promised supporters the team he picks at Manchester City will give it a right good go.

Lambert is more than aware of the strength of support travelling to the Etihad Stadium this evening.

He says it's absolutely critical the players give the loyal fans a performance to be proud of against the champions.

He knows it's going to be a tough proposition but assured supporters his side wouldn't lie down against Roberto Mancini's men.

He said: "Nobody will expect anything from us, other than ourselves, but you go up there and you go and try and win.

"I'm not going to change my ideas, we're going to go and try and win against one of the best teams in Europe regardless of what personnel they have out.

"We will be up for it and I'll tell them we've got nothing to lose.

"Manchester City are not the champions of the league for nothing and they've just nearly come away from the Bernabau with a credible draw and should have done, or might have even won it.

"It shows you the standard we're going to have to come up against.

"If Roberto makes changes it doesn't matter because they've still got some world class players to come in.

"I'll go as strong as I think I can to win the game - I think that's important, regardless of the other team. I'm pretty sure we'll have a good following going up there so it's not something I want to take lightly.

"I'll try and pick a team that can go and win, I don't want to just go up there and just think we're going to get beat. Too many people come to watch us to do that so we have to try and get through."
