Sunderland U21 v Villa U21 team news: Albrighton set for return

By Dan Harrison

Marc Albrighton is set for his first action of the season in this afternoon's Barclays U21 Premier League encounter against Sunderland.

Albrighton hasn't featured this term after suffering a broken metatarsal on the first day of pre-season training.

But, after returning to training last week, he will get the opportunity to step up his fitness at the Academy of Light today.

The match kicks off at 2pm.

Deadline day signings Ashley Westwood and Jordan Bowery are also named in the Villa squad.

Midfield duo Daniel Johnson and Samir Carruthers are involved for Gordon Cowans' team too.

The boys in claret and blue have made a positive start in the new competition, having beaten Stoke City as well as earning back-to-back draws against Southampton.

By contrast, Sunderland are still looking for their first win after losing 3-2 to league leaders Southampton and drawing 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur.

The two clubs met at Bodymoor Heath on Saturday in the Barclays U18 Premier League with the Black Cats emerging as 3-2 winners.

Mikael Mandron scored twice and Carl Lawson also found the target for Sunderland, while Charlie Ward and Jordan Graham got Villa's goals.

The Academy of Light was a happy hunting ground for the claret and blues last season.

It was the venue where they clinched the Barclays Premier Reserve League South title, winning 2-0 thanks to a brace from Michael Drennan.
