Sunderland U21 v Villa U21 preview: Young guns look to extend run

Villa's young guns will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in the Barclays U21 Premier League when they take on Sunderland this afternoon.

The boys in claret and blue have made a positive start in the new competition, having beaten Stoke City as well as earning back-to-back draws against Southampton.

By contrast, Sunderland are still looking for their first win after losing 3-2 to league leaders Southampton and drawing 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur.

Today's game at the Academy of Light kicks off at 2pm.

The two clubs met at Bodymoor Heath on Saturday in the Barclays U18 Premier League with the Black Cats emerging as 3-2 winners.

Mikael Mandron scored twice and Carl Lawson also found the target for Sunderland, while Charlie Ward and Jordan Graham got Villa's goals.

The Academy of Light was a happy hunting ground for the claret and blues last season.

It was the venue where they clinched the Barclays Premier Reserve League South title, winning 2-0 thanks to a brace from Michael Drennan.
