Maloney followed in the footsteps of Patrik Berger [at Blackburn] and Craig Gardner [at Middlesbrough] when he sent a dipping 25-yard free-kick past goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson and into the bottom corner in the 74th minute.

The Scottish midfielder's stunning strike secured victory in a match in which Martin O'Neill's men were briefly under pressure at the start of each half but were otherwise in control.

Thomas Sorensen made a couple of good early saves from Joey Barton and Darius Vassell but the visitors gradually took control.

Gabby Agbonlahor had a low drive held by goalkeeper Isaksson before Craig Gardner chested down a Sylvain Distin clearance to send an angled volley narrowly wide.

John Carew opened the scoring in the 24th minute, the Norwegian getting in front of Distin to head home a cross from Ashley Young.

Agbonlahor almost increased the lead, escaping his marker to lunge at Gareth Barry's free-kick and send a diving header just wide, yet all the good work of the opening period was nearly undone on the stroke of half-time.

Sorensen, having just tipped away Barton's powerful rising drive for a corner, was penalised by pushing Vassell, although it looked as if the former Villa man backed into the Danish 'keeper.

Either way, it made no difference as Barton sent the resultant spot kick over the bar.

There were few chances in the second half, but Maloney's free-kick was certainly a moment to savour.
