Agbonlahor player lowdown: Gabby assesses the squad

Gabby Agbonlahor is what you might call an elder statesman at Villa.

So he's probably the perfect man to give his lowdown on the state of the squad, especially the new signings who have joined under Paul Lambert in the transfer window.

The speed demon runs the rule over the very best players in certain categories too.

Ron Vlaar

Ron is a really good player and a really nice guy.

He's a very strong defender who is excellent doing his job at the back.

But he's also excellent on the ball too. He's very adept at playing the ball out from the back. He's very skilful.

He's also a leader. He's very involved and he's passionate about his football when he's talking. Obviously Darren is the captain and he's doing a great job. I can see Ron being a Villa captain of the future.

Off the field, he's a really nice bloke, very friendly.

Brett Holman

He didn't speak for two weeks. He didn't seem to say a word. I don't know whether he was shy or just getting used to his surroundings.

But it's all turned around now. He's involved in the dressing room with all the banter!

In fact, he's always the first with a comment or two when stuff is flying around during the week.

He's a quality player too, very intelligent on the ball and can make things happen in the final third. He works his socks off also.

Karim El Ahmadi

Karim is always smiling. He's a really positive person - and it's the same when he's got the ball at his feet.

He's a top player, very difficult to dispossess and he's a vital part of our midfield now.

Matt Lowton

Matt is an excellent full-back, a good defender and always looking to get forward and attack too.

He's quick, enthusiastic and will only improve. You wouldn't think he'd come from League One. He's taken to the Premier League very quickly and doesn't look out of place at all.

Ashley Westwood

Another good ball player like Karim. He's only just joined the group but he's settled in really well.

He's a nice guy too and I am sure he will do well for us.

Joe Bennett

Much like Matt, Joe will be a good addition.

He's another full-back who likes to get forward but also does his defensive work too.

Christian Benteke

I haven't met Christian yet.

From what I have seen he's big and strong - a real out-and-out targetman.

I look forward to meeting him when he's back from international duty.

Jordan Bowery

Jordan is young, full of energy and determined to do well.

Again, he's only just joined so I am looking forward to getting to know him in the coming weeks ahead.

Best of the Rest

Best Trainer

Brad Guzan. He works incredibly hard out there. He's a top professional.

Most Skilful

Barry Bannan. He's just brilliant with the ball at his feet. I am sure he's a joy to watch.

Stephen Ireland. He's a funny lad in the dressing room.

Me! But if I can't pick myself I'd go for Charles. He's fast!

Ciaran Clark. He's an intelligent guy!

Best Dressed

Me again! I'm putting my foot down - that's definitely me!

Best Taste In Music

I'd have to go for Charles again!
