Stephen Ireland starred in the victory over Tranmere and immediately roared: "That's just what we needed."
Villa went down comfortably 3-1 to Everton on Saturday but they turned the tables to see off Tranmere 3-0 in the Capital One Cup second round clash.
Ireland believes it can be a springboard for the squad as they look to impress on the top-flight stage.
He told AVTV: "It was a good night. That victory was a great positive to take into the game at Newcastle. We really wanted that. The performance and goals were vital.
"It's just what we needed. The team played really well.
"We looked solid in defence and attack, we moved the ball well and everything the gaffer wanted us to do we did. We had a good result to show for it and that was very pleasing."
Ireland insists the key to victory was scoring the first goal and building from there.
He added: "We came out thinking it was going to be tough if we went behind.
"I know we were playing at home but these cup games can go anyway!
"I have played in quite a few of them over the years and once the opposition go up it's backs to the wall. It can really difficult.
"So we knew we needed to get that first goal. And in the second half, we knew we had to get that second goal. We knew if we gave them any glimmer of hope, we could make it tough for ourselves.
"But in the end it was a case of job done with a convincing victory. We were quite comfortable.
"It's a good win for everyone. Some young players came through and either played from the start or came off the bench. It was positive all-round I feel."
