Villa v Tranmere player preview: Baker eyes cup confidence boost

By Dan Harrison

Nathan Baker admits tonight's Capital One Cup clash against Tranmere Rovers can't come soon enough as Villa go in search of a confidence-boosting victory.

The boys in claret and blue are looking to register their first win of the new campaign when Tranmere arrive at Villa Park for the second round tie.

Baker says it is a good opportunity for Paul Lambert's team to get some momentum going after back-to-back Barclays Premier League defeats.

"We need a win against Tranmere to get our confidence back up again then hopefully carry that into the Premier League," said the defender.

"The sooner the better for this game to come along really so we can get our heads up again and boost our confidence."

Baker insists the squad must quickly put Saturday's defeat to Everton behind them and focus on the Tranmere tie.

He is confident of an improved performance after the disappointing 3-1 defeat by the Toffees.

"The Everton game was hard," the England U21 international added.

"Obviously we are trying to improve as we go along in the season and hopefully in the next game we'll get the result that we want, which is a win.

"It is the start of the season and teams want to get some early wins on the board and get up the table.

"They did well against Man United and carried on against us.

"They played well so we have to hold our hands up but I think we will improve in the next game."
